Nintendo Power 100 Commemorative Coin Prototype
This coin was a prototype sent to Nintendo in the United States in 1997 by Osborne Coinage. It was an early unreleased coin for the Nintendo Power magazine.
Background Info:
-
Nintendo Power magazine was Nintendo's official North American publication for all things gaming news, tips, tricks, etc. In 1997, the magazine would release its 100th issue and in the back of the book, Nintendo offered the chance for readers to purchase a commemorative three-piece coin to mark the milestone.
However, the coin in question was an early prototype design by the manufacturers in charge of making these coins, Osborne Coinage. This was an early mock-up sent to Nintendo for approval, but would eventually be rejected in favor for the final designs. It is worth noting that one of the final coins did look quite similar, in terms of the Mario art used, though the color and back design are totally different. Despite never being officially released, there are copies of this early prototype and tend to fetch for a pretty penny.
